Short Term Housing

Short Term Housing

The Society has two central locations that provide eighteen short-term independent apartment units for women and women with children.

Short Term housing is for a period of up to one year. Short Term housing units are independent unfurnished suites – Residents set three self-directed goals during their short term residency and receive some additional support from the Society during their residency in working toward these goals.

The National Society of HOPE is a non-profit housing society committed to providing housing to women, mothers & children in transition.

FAQs

How can I rent an affordable housing unit with the Society of Hope?

Those who wish to rent a unit with the Society must first complete an application. When a current tenant gives notice and a unit becomes available, applicants are placed from an applicant database.

This is an emergency, I need a place to live by the end of the month - can you help me?

Sorry, No.  The Society of Hope does not provide emergency housing. Please contact the Kelowna Women’s Resource Centre at 250-762-2355 or Kelowna Community Resources at 250-763-8008 for current listings of emergency housing.

Where am I on the waiting list?

New placement can only be made when one of the Society’s existing tenants give notice to move.  The Society is not able to predict when tenants will give this notice, so the Society is unable to provide information on how long it may take to get housed. The Society only reviews applications when a unit becomes available.  Placements are made based on a number of different variables such as income, age, family configuration, and need.  It is not a linear, first come, first served process, therefore the priority of placement is constantly changing as new applications are being received.

What does a successful applicant profile look like?

  • Women 19 years or older with or without children
  • Ability to live independently and manage your personal household
  • Willingness to adhere to specific rules and regulations while a resident of short term housing
  • Agreement to establish and work toward completing self-directed goals while in short term housing
  • Willingness to access community resources
  • Drug and alcohol addiction free for six months
  • Male dependants (children) 11 years or under
  • Ability to provide a good current landlord reference
  • Family size is appropriate for the unit size that is available.

How does the Society choose the applicant for the next available unit?

Placements are made based on a number of different variables such as income, age, family configuration, and need.  It is not a linear, first come, first served process, therefore the priority of placement is constantly changing due to new applications being received, and from the criteria listed in the question above.

How much is the rent?

The Society operates under a number of Housing programs but basically provides two types of rentals, Subsidized Rentals and Affordable Rentals.  Subsidized Rental units are approximately 30% of the applicant’s gross monthly income and Affordable Rental Units are set at a flat rental rate, based on the number of occupants.

The Society collects the utility fee with the monthly rent and remits payment to the utility companies.

Will I have my own space?

Yes.  All rentals are 100% independent living, each unit is self contained and has its own kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom(s).  There are common “Community Rooms” for Tenants that desire to put on a coordinated event.

Can I have visitors?

Only registered Residents  may be on premises between the hours of 10:00 pm – 8:00 am. There are to be no guests, including family, staying in the suite overnight without written permission from the Site Manager.

All males over 12 years of age must remain in common areas and may not enter restricted areas without express permission from the Society of Hope. Restricted areas include stairwells, elevator, 2nd and 3rd floor halls, laundry rooms and the private suites of the Residents.

Guests must abide by the rules as specified in the “Rules and Regulations” document.

How long will it take to get placed in a unit?

New placements can only be made when one of the Society’s existing tenants moves out.  The Society is not able to predict when tenants will give notice, so the Society is unable to provide information on how long it may take to get housed.  The Society only reviews applications when a unit becomes available.

How long can I stay in Short Term Housing?

Residents can stay for one year. Residents, in good standing, can apply to extend their residency beyond one year. All residencies must be less than two years.

Is this substance free housing?

The use of alcohol, non-prescription drugs or abuse of prescription drugs on the premises is strictly prohibited.

Can I smoke in my unit?

Sorry, No.  Smoking and/or Vaping in the suites is prohibited.  These buildings are designated as a “SMOKE- FREE” environment. Smoking and/or Vaping tobacco and/or cannabis is not permitted in common areas of the building, or in units. Smoking is permitted in the outside designated areas.

Certified Service animals with “Guide Animal Certification” may be considered.
